Matt Eberflus is still considering offensive changes: “Everything is on the table”

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus had virtually no information during his press conference Monday about the changes he will make to Chicago’s struggling offense.

Eberflus said he is “still in the process” of evaluating and making the adjustments. But he noted that “everything is on the table.”

“There has to be a change and adjustment to what we do, because obviously we have done that lost there in a rowsaid Eberflus. “But there’s also the perspective that we’re 4-5, haven’t played our division yet and are just about to start doing that in a big football game this week. So I’m in the process of getting this done.

“There will be changes and adjustments. I won’t disclose these either at the moment.”

When asked directly whether offensive coordinator Shane Waldron will remain on staff, Eberflus didn’t give a true answer – which could be telling in itself.

“Like I said, we’re going through this process right now,” Eberflus said. “And all of these adjustments and changes, things that we’re doing, we’re still in the evaluation phase.”

Eberflus was also asked about the case for moving on with Waldron, who was hired in the offseason after spending 2021-2023 as Seattle’s OC.

“Well, we’re in the evaluation phase again,” Eberflus said. “It’s important that we involve all the people on the coaching staff in the building, get all the input and combine our thoughts to find the best answer. That’s where we are right now. We have to take a look at that this afternoon too.”

The one thing Eberflus maintained is that the team doesn’t change quarterbacks.

“No,” said Eberflus, “Caleb [Williams] is our starter.”

After defeating the Rams, Panthers and Jaguars 4-2, the Bears have struggled on offense ever since. Chicago has scored 15, nine and three points in its last three games, losing in each. The team has not scored an offensive touchdown in 34 possessions since the bye.

“Yes, that’s all of them, isn’t it? I talked about this with the group today. It’s about everyone,” said Eberflus. “It’s about following the same play and making sure we execute it, and when we get into the scoring zone we have to make sure we execute it at a high level. It still comes down to making plays in those moments. And I’m good at never making a negative move when you’re in the goal zone.”

Whatever changes Eberflus makes — and it appears that at least a shift in Waldron’s responsibilities is likely at this point — Eberflus said the decision is his and his alone.

The Bears will play their first division game of the season on Sunday when they host the Packers.
