Bears HC Matt Eberflus vows there will be changes after loss to Patriots: ‘Everything is on the table’

Sunday’s loss extended the Bears’ losing streak to three, a stretch that began with a heartbreaking, last-second Hail Mary win at Washington.

Since that fateful play, the Bears’ offense has struggled greatly, gaining 23 consecutive possessions without scoring a touchdown. According to NFL Research, it is the longest such streak for Chicago since Mitchell Trubisky’s rookie season in 2017 (Weeks 6-8, 23 consecutive possessions).

After scoring just 9 points in their loss to Arizona in Week 9, the Bears recorded their lowest totals of the season (3) and net yards (142) in Sunday’s home loss to the Patriots. With his first two tackles missed due to injuries, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked nine times, the most by a player in a game this season. The protection issues were an extension of the previous week’s result, and Chicago has not allowed more than six sacks in consecutive games since 1993, according to NFL Research.

While Eberflus said Monday that Williams will remain in the starting lineup to clear up any confusion, how the Bears adjust going forward — through a roster or coaching adjustment, possibly by offensive coordinator Shane Waldron — will be decided in future days.

“In this regard, communication in the game needs to be better,” said Eberflus. “The adjustments, the tactical adjustments have to be better on all sides. Everything is on the table and it’s important that we look at everything and take the time to get it done.”

The Bears face a crucial and challenging back-end schedule starting Sunday against the Packers, their first divisional game of 2024 in a top-heavy NFC North. Eberflus’ changes will be known by then, but whether these adjustments will be successful remains to be seen.
