US Representative Ashley Hinson is resigning from the chairmanship of the Republican Conference in the House of Representatives

U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson has left the shortlist of Republican lawmakers to chair the House GOP conference, replacing Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., who has been nominated for a top job in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration .

Trump picked Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations on Monday, giving Republicans little time to find a new leader of the House GOP conference before their internal leadership election on Wednesday.

Hinson, who some Republicans view as a possible future U.S. Senate candidate, was re-elected last week as an incumbent to represent Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District and serve a third term in the U.S. House.

“I am honored that my colleagues would consider me for this important position, but I am not running for a leadership position,” Hinson said in a statement. “My focus is on serving Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District and making sure we meet President Trump’s agenda.”

Republicans are poised to retain the House to maintain GOP control for the next two years under Trump. But which party will have the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives is still unclear, with more than a dozen congressional elections still uncalled as of Monday morning, the Associated Press reported.

Hinson said in her re-election speech last Tuesday that she plans to support Trump for the next four years. Trump supported Hinson in her candidacy in the recent election.

“Let’s talk about what the first day of a President Trump will look like. Closing the border – I think we can all agree that that has to happen. Restart American energy projects, fire swamp bureaucrats,” Hinson said. “And you know what, I know the man pretty well and I bet he’ll do that before most of us have our second cup of coffee tomorrow. He’ll be busy.”
