Will he replace Tom Cruise?

After a rumor began circulating online that Tom Cruise wanted Glen Powell to replace him in the “Mission: Impossible” series, ESPN commentator Pat McAfee called Powell himself and asked if it was true.

On his November 12 broadcast of “The Pat McAfee Show,” the host FaceTimed Powell and read him the rumor, saying, “We just want to call and say congratulations, bro.”

Powell appeared to playfully deny the rumor, replying, “My mom would never let me do that.” Powell added that the stunt-filled “Mission: Impossible” series was the “worst gig in town, everyone knows that.”

“It’s a death trap,” Powell added, nodding, of course, to Cruise performing his own stunts for the action series, including hanging from the side of a flying plane, climbing the world’s tallest building and riding a motorcycle down a cliff before the parachute jump.

Powell burst out laughing, causing McAfee to exclaim, “He’s lying!” Then the two started talking about college football.

Before hanging up, Powell told McAfee that he was currently on the set of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man,” adding, “It’s getting sick!”

The eighth “Mission: Impossible” film, titled “The Final Reckoning,” is scheduled for May 23, 2025. Despite the title, it is not yet confirmed whether this will be the last time Cruise appears as Agent Ethan Hunt.

Cruise starred alongside Powell in the hit 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, for which both actors performed many of their own stunts. Powell also took a leading role in this year’s Tornado film “Twisters,” in which he played alongside Daisy Edgar Jones. Cruise showed up to the premiere of that film and posted an Instagram photo of him and Powell with the caption: “Fun evening with friends watching a movie!”
