“Take a nap at the top of the ivory tower”

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton said Monday that “woke” Democrats have been “napping in an ivory tower” and have failed to address issues affecting Americans.

“The woke people, I don’t know what they woke up to because we never slept,” Sharpton said during a Monday appearance on MSNBC. “They were the ones napping up in the ivory tower while we were on the ground dealing with people having everyday problems.”

He added that protesters on college campuses are selective in choosing their causes. Across the United States, protesters have demonstrated at schools against investments in companies believed to be supporting Israel in its war against Hamas terrorists.

They also occurred when “ordinary people” tried to pay their children’s college tuition, help them with admissions and process student loans, Sharpton noted.

“The local causes that ordinary people had to deal with were missing… which is why when many people raised the issue, they came back to us,” he explained.

According to Sharpton, “latte liberals” have also represented people and things that were never part of the original messages, pointing to calls to fund the police.

“All of us who have been and continue to be on the front lines of police reform have never said we should defund the police,” Sharpton said. “We’ve tried to put officers of color and other circumstances in those departments to deal with stop-and-frisk and other things.”

Sharpton, who spoke at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, said he has worked with other civil rights leaders to reform existing systems rather than replace them, he added.

“The whole goal of the civil rights movement and the movement now is to correct the system, not overthrow it, and make things work equally for everyone, and not just turn everything upside down and everything into an undefined “To transform utopia,” said Sharpton.
