Sinner Fritz Nitto ATP Finals 2024 Tuesday | Nitto ATP Finals

Italian improves to 7-0 on indoor hard courts in 2024

Jannik Sinner’s quest to cap his outstanding season with a Nitto ATP Finals trophy continued with vigor on Tuesday evening.

The top seed secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Taylor Fritz in a thrilling duel in the season finale, moving him to 2-0 in the Ilie Nastase group. After a quick start from Fritz, home favorite Sinner delivered a confident performance to the 12,000 fans cheering him on at the Inalpi Arena.

“It was a very tough match, we got to know each other very well in a Grand Slam final,” said Sinner, who defeated Fritz in this year’s US Open championship match. “We knew exactly what to expect today, he was very aggressive and I was prepared.

“I just tried to serve very well in the important moments, which I succeeded in doing. That was a very decisive game in the second set, I was 0/30 behind. If he breaks me there, the dynamic could change.”

Undeterred by the enormous task that lay before him, Fritz Sinner put himself through his paces in the early stages of the competition. However, the 23-year-old raised his game as he recorded an hour and 40-minute triumph, improving to 3-1 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

In a courageous eighth game, Fritz dug deep to hold serve at 0/40, but could no longer hold off Sinner. In the 10th game, Sinner came to life, converting his fourth break point and taking the first set, according to Infosys ATP Stats. However, Sinner was helped by the American, who made 16 unforced errors while his opponent made 11 errors.

In a battle between two of the tour’s purest ball hitters, Sinner showed signs of the fast-paced tennis that has catapulted him to No. 1 in the PIF ATP rankings. This was reinforced in the seventh game of the second set when Sinner scored a stunning backhand winner en route to serving at 0/30, shifting the momentum significantly in his favour.

Chasing his eighth Tour title in 2024, Sinner returns to action in Turin after a month-long break from competitive tennis. The Italian, who finished second at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals, now appears to be a strong contender to advance in the group having not lost a set.

Sinner will look to extend his perfect 2-0 record in the Ilie Nastase group when he takes on fourth seed Daniil Medvedev on Thursday. Fritz, who is 1-1, is aiming for a decisive win against Alex de Minaur to advance to the semifinals for the second time (2022).
