Live updates: Trump meets Biden at the White House; Election of GOP majority leader

Trump and Biden shake hands as the president-elect heads to Capitol Hill

Donald Trump met with Joe Biden at the White House to discuss a timeline for the transition. The tone at the opening session was warm and cordial.

On a busy day in Washington DC, Republican senators also elected a new majority leader to replace Mitch McConnell, with South Dakota’s John Thune emerging victorious.

The president-elect has since announced that tech billionaire Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) tasked with cutting government costs, eliminating regulations and restructuring federal agencies .

Musk responded by promising that DOGE will “send shockwaves through the system and everyone involved in government waste, a lot of people.”

The new 47th president announced a series of other appointments to his new administration on Tuesday, naming John Ratcliffe, his national intelligence director from 2020 to 2021, as his next CIA director and Fox News host Pete Hegseth as defense secretary.

Trump also announced that Mike Huckabee had been chosen as his new ambassador to Israel, Steven Witkoff as his special envoy to the Middle East and William Joseph McGinley as his White House adviser.

Trump and Biden played well in the Oval Office. Elsewhere in the White House, it felt like the circus had returned

Nearly four years after he left Washington, DC under a cloud of shame rather than attend Joe Biden’s inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump’s customized 757 landed at Joint Base Andrews and taxied almost to the exact spot from which he Air Force One left the same airport on board.

There was no red carpet to meet him this time. There was no salute upon his arrival, and only a single Air Force officer waited to greet the man who will become commander-in-chief of the world’s most powerful military for the second time in just a few months. About 20 miles away at the White House, Trump was greeted with nowhere near the pomp that would await him after his inauguration on Jan. 20, four years to the day after he left without greeting Biden upon his arrival.

Thune was elected as the first new Senate GOP leader in nearly two decades

John Thune was elected in a secret ballot and is expected to take over as the new Senate majority leader in January when the new Congress begins.

Thune is the first new Republican Senate leader in 18 years, succeeding the longest-serving Senate leader, Mitch McConnell.

The South Dakota senator will assume leadership of the Senate Republican caucus as the GOP takes control of both chambers of Congress as well as the White House.

Thune is the current top Republican politician and, at 63, is considered relatively young by the standards of Republican leadership. He succeeds McConnell (82) and won in the second round against John Cornyn (72).

Republicans are expected to govern with a 53-seat majority in the Senate as they tackle tax cuts, crackdown on immigration and energy policy.

Trump’s defense secretary ‘can’t remember washing his hands once in the last decade’

President-elect Donald Trump’s new defense secretary once said he couldn’t remember washing his hands in 10 years, in bizarre recordings that resurfaced after his appointment. In 2019, Fox News host Pete Hegseth explained on the show that he hadn’t washed his hands in 10 years because “germs aren’t a real thing.” He said he believed there were no germs because they weren’t visible to the naked eye. Mr. Trump will nominate Mr. Hegseth to his Cabinet, the latest in a flurry of announcements about the shape of the new government.
