Bushfires in Manhattan send smoke billowing over the New York skyline

A major wildfire broke out in Upper Manhattan as the Tri-State grapples with increasing fire danger due to drought conditions, dry air and strong winds.

(Smoking can be seen throughout most of the Inwood neighborhood and on the West Side Highway in a video from SkyFOX.)

Northerly winds drive smoke to the Cloisters and the George Washington Bridge. Smoke was later seen over Midtown, so people in Manhattan should expect to smell smoke.

The fire appeared to have started in a wooded area near West 207th Street and Seaman Avenue in Inwood Hill. Crews said the fire was under control around 4 p.m

There is no information available as to what caused this fire, nor have there been any reports of disturbances or injuries.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine released a dramatic video of flames surrounding a sidewalk.

The high fire danger affecting millions of people across New York and New Jersey is expected to continue through the weekend as the region remains bone dry with little to no rain expected on the horizon.

In New Jersey, firefighters continue to battle the Jennings Creek Fire in West Milford. According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the fire, which spans the New York and New Jersey state lines, is 30% contained.
