2024 New York State Senate election results

Democrats in the state Senate have managed to maintain their majority in both elections after their victory in 2018, bucking the dysfunctional reputation they earned the last time they were in power. The party is certain to maintain that majority for the third time this election – but Republicans are hoping to break Democrats’ supermajority in the chamber. Democrats won a two-thirds majority in 2020, expanding their ranks enough to work with the Assembly (where the party also has a supermajority) to override a veto. But Democrats suffered setbacks in both chambers of the state Legislature in 2022, and now the party’s majority is down to just one seat.

Republicans, largely sidelined at the state level despite gaining ground locally and in Congress, see a chance to break the veto-proof majority even if winning back the chamber is not in sight. An opportunity for momentum is in central New York, where Republicans were just 10 votes away from flipping the 50th Senate District in 2022 and where Democrats no longer have an incumbent. The race there remains too close to decide.

But if some Democrats are on the defensive, so are Republicans. For Democrats, the state’s 39th Senate District in and around Poughkeepsie appeared to be one of their best electoral opportunities. As a new district created as part of the 2022 redistricting process, the Democratic-leaning seat appeared to be a good bet for Democrats if it won. Instead, Republican Senator Rob Rolison, then mayor of Poughkeepsie, won. Rolison has a slight lead in the race, which was not reported by The Associated Press.
