3 firefighters injured in Riverton garage fire

RIVERTON — Three firefighters were injured while battling a car fire at a garage in Riverton Saturday afternoon.

Shortly before 1 p.m., firefighters received a call reporting that a car caught fire in a garage at 1230 W. 13200 South when someone tried to start the vehicle, according to Unified Fire Authority Public Information Officer Benjamin Porter.

Firefighters responded and quickly gained control of the fire and extinguished it. However, Porter said flammable liquids re-ignited while firefighters were still in the garage.

Witness video shows at least one firefighter’s clothing catching fire, prompting his fellow firefighters to rush to his aid to put out the flames.

“Since elementary school, we’ve all been taught to stop, drop and roll to smother the fire,” Porter said. “I think the members (firefighters) who responded quickly and jumped on the firefighter to help put out the fire was a remarkable act. I think that’s something we should… recognize them for.”

Three firefighters suffered injuries, Porter said. Two of them were taken to hospital with minor injuries and the third was treated at the scene.

The fire was completely extinguished by 2 p.m. Investigators say it doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

No information was provided about the estimated damage caused.
