7-year-old killed in drunk driving accident on Detroit’s east side

A car ran a red light at 7 Mile and Mound just after 4:30 p.m. today, crashing into another vehicle and causing the death of a 7-year-old boy. His five-year-old sister remains in critical condition following the accident.

A total of three vehicles were involved in the accident, a hit-and-run accident.

Detroit Police Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes said the crash on Detroit’s east side remains under investigation.

About two hours after the accident, the driver returned to the scene and turned himself in.

“We have a great community,” Hayes said.

Hayes said the at-fault driver was a 25-year-old man who was not from Detroit. No further details about his identity were released pending formal charges.

“Alcohol was a contributing factor in this accident,” Hayes said.

According to Hayes, the man had a double-digit blood alcohol level just two hours after the accident.

No one was seriously injured in the accident, although the other occupants of the vehicles suffered minor pain from the collision.

“When that person turned himself in, it was a bit of a relief,” Hayes said. “We will summarize today’s events and present them to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.”

Hayes said there were three adults in the minivan with the children.

Two adults, a man and a woman, both in their 20s, were also hospitalized in serious condition; The police released her a few hours after the accident.

Hayes said driving is a privilege and drunk drivers will be held accountable.
