A wrong-way accident in Ankeny on I-35 kills a 91-year-old driver

A 91-year-old man died after driving the wrong way on Interstate 35 near Ankeny, resulting in a crash that injured two other drivers and backed up rush-hour traffic Thursday.

According to an Iowa State Patrol accident report, Paul Jacques, of Minnesota, was driving north on the southbound highway between East Mixmaster and Southeast Corporate Woods Drive when the accident occurred around 5 p.m.

According to the report, Jacques, who was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Impala, collided with a Toyota Highlander. The Highlander became airborne and was hit by a Toyota Sequoia, which was unable to avoid the collision. A car in front of the Highlander “took evasive action” to avoid Jacques and crashed into the concrete barrier, the report said.

Jacques was taken to Mercy Hospital but later died. Two drivers were injured and were in critical condition.

The accident is under investigation and the report did not specify why or how Jacques entered the roadway the wrong way.
