Amtrak trains between NYC and New Haven suspended until Wednesday afternoon due to fires at the Bronx substation

PARKCHESTER, Bronx (WABC) — According to Amtrak, train service between New York (NYP) and New Haven (NHV) has been suspended until 2 p.m. Wednesday due to isolated fires near tracks in the Bronx.

FDNY firefighters responded to the scene of two adjacent substation fires.

Initially, a fire and transformer explosion was reported at a 60,000-square-foot warehouse on Bronxdale Avenue between Van Nest and East Tremont Avenue around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials say the warehouse is used to store auto parts, hydraulic equipment, pallets and vehicles.

Then, just after 2:30 p.m., another fire was reported a quarter-mile away at an Amtrak substation at White Plains Road and Baker Avenue.

A high-voltage transmission line that powers trains caught fire at the substation, causing Amtrak to shut off power to its lines.

The fire spread from Amtrak property to a Con Edison substation next door, setting three cars ablaze in that parking lot. Officials said the cars belonged to employees, but Con Ed said the fire had no impact on infrastructure or customers.

FDNY officials said during an evening news conference that both fires were brought under control around 5:50 p.m

They confirmed there was a bushfire at the scene, but it is still under investigation whether this caused the two original fires.

No injuries were reported.

Metro North service is not affected by this fire, allowing Amtrak customers to transfer in New Haven and Metro-North will honor Amtrak tickets to Penn Station NY.

Amtrak service requires customers to take the subway from Grand Central to Penn Station.

The Ministry of Health is advising people in the area to keep their windows closed and stay indoors to avoid exposure to smoke.
