Are banks, post offices, UPS and FedEx open on Veterans Day? What you should know

Veterans Day is Monday, and while most restaurants, grocery stores and retail stores are open that day, banks and post offices are not.

The celebration of Veterans Day, a federal holiday, dates back to November 11, 1918, when the “temporary cessation of hostilities” or armistice between the Allied nations and Germany took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in its eleventh month.

“For this reason, November 11, 1918 is widely considered to be the end of the ‘war to end all wars,'” the government agency’s website says. Veterans Day will continue to be celebrated on November 11th, regardless of which day of the week it falls on.

The day’s purpose is to be a “celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, their love of country and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” according to its website.
