ASU Football’s Jordyn Tyson gives the go-ahead for TD catch against UCF

Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson caught two touchdown passes in the second half against UCF on Saturday, and his score with less than five minutes left gave the Sun Devils a final 35-31 victory.

After a missed UCF field goal, the Sun Devils drove 71 yards in nine plays and took the lead on a 13-yard connection between Tyson and quarterback Sam Leavitt with 4:55 on the clock.

Tyson caught seven passes for 99 yards with the two touchdowns in the win, which was without star running back Cam Skattebo due to injury. His performance was reminiscent of ASU’s 35-31 win over Kansas earlier this season, when Tyson scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“It’s just because my coaches and Sam trust me,” Tyson told reporters after the game. “You know I’ll play when my number is called.”

The two teams went back and forth in the second half as Tyson’s first touchdown catch gave Arizona State a 28-24 lead in the third quarter. The scoring drive was fueled by Leavitt dropping back 15 yards and throwing a deep ball to Tyson, who made a spectacular jump shot into double coverage for 29 yards. Tyson scored on a nine-yard touchdown five plays later.

“That’s what JT does. He’s as good as anyone I’ve been around, the pinnacle of football,” said head coach Kenny Dillingham. “JT still has two years left. Sam still has three years left. I mean, this could be an exciting combination here for the future of Sun Devil football.”

UCF scored on its next drive, forced a punt and prepared to take a commanding lead by pushing into ASU territory before the missed kick.

Knights running back RJ Harvey was the visitors’ standout player, rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns. However, Harvey was overwhelmed on a fourth-and-2 Wildcat carry with 3:24 left. ASU ran the clock down to five seconds.

The Sun Devils took a 21-17 lead after scoring two touchdowns in a 10-second span in the final minutes before halftime. Chamon Metayer caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Leavitt, and after a UCF special teams fumble, ASU’s LT Welch returned an interception nine yards for a touchdown.

ASU improved to 7-2 this season and 4-2 in Big 12 play. The Sun Devils didn’t lose at home.

“It’s amazing bro, it’s a huge difference,” Tyson said. “We have people who care about us…we all love each other and we are all so close. I think that’s why we’re in this situation now.”
