Austin Weather: Slight risk of severe storms in Central Texas

Rainy, stormy and cooler times are ahead and all the conditions are in place for the best rain chances we have seen in the last two months.

A cold front along with a strong upper low will collide with the warmth and moisture to produce patchy light rain during the day and heavy rain and storms tonight.

There is a slight to slight risk of severe storms and localized flooding.

After the front breaks through, the weather on Election Day will be wonderful, with sunny, cooler and drier conditions. Then comes the next Pacific low, which will bring clouds and rain again until the end of the week.

Buckle up, the weather is suddenly getting very active.

Tonight will be the most rainy and stormy. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded us to a LOW risk of severe storms. This means isolated severe storms with medium-sized hail and damaging winds are possible.

Two storm rounds are possible:

  • First round: 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. (individual reporting)
  • Second round: 6:00 p.m. – 12:00 p.m. (rich coverage)

The danger includes quarter-sized hail, wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour and a slight risk of tornadoes.

The highest risk of hail is along the I-35 corridor and the highest risk of damaging winds is from Austin to La Grange.

Rainfall totals are expected to be around 0.5 to 1 inch, with isolated spots possibly 1 to 2 inches.

Minor flooding possible during low water crossings.
