Badgers News: Senior Football Assistant Resigns After OWI Arrest

Wisconsin Badgers senior advisor Jack Del Rio is resigning from the program following a recent arrest, head coach Luke Fickell announced during his weekly press conference on Monday.

“We take anything that happens, whether it be with our student-athletes or our staff, incredibly seriously. And we had an issue this weekend that I’m sure our government has already released a statement about, which is what happened on Thursday with Jack Del Rio,” Fickell said. “Of course I spoke to our administration on Friday, of course spoke to Jack, sat down with him and he will release a statement here. I would imagine pretty soon after the press conference that he will move on and that he will step down and move on.

“It is a difficult situation, decisions for which we must all be able to take full responsibility. And that’s exactly what Jack will do and we will continue to move forward. None of us, not him or me or anyone in our athletic department, wants to eliminate the distraction or have a distraction from the task at hand. We still have a few weeks left in the season, there’s a lot of things we have to keep fighting for and nobody wants to take that away from us and whether it’s me or Jack or anyone in our football program, so we’re going to keep doing that .

“And now we can focus on the things that are really, really at hand here, with the best team in the country that has an incredible opportunity in front of us and an opportunity and opportunity for us to continue to climb the mountain.” we spoke.”

Del Rio, 61, was arrested early Friday morning for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI).

Regarding the incident, Wisconsin Athletics released the following statement:

“Wisconsin Athletics is aware of the incident involving football staff member Jack Del Rio. We take such matters very seriously and continue to gather information.”

The Badgers face the Oregon Ducks this weekend at Camp Randall Stadium and are looking to pull off a big upset on the No. 1 team in the country.
