Because of this, Costco has recalled nearly 80,000 pounds of butter

Costco recalled nearly 80,000 pounds of branded butter last month because the product label was missing a key ingredient: milk.

The wholesaler recalled 79,200 pounds of two types of butter – 46,800 pounds of its Kirkland Signature unsalted sweet cream butter and 32,400 pounds of Kirkland Signature salted sweet cream butter because it omitted the allergen.

The Food and Drug Administration Butter said both products list cream, “but the ‘contains milk’ statement may be missing.”

The FDA classified the action as a “Class II” recall, which describes situations in which exposure to the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

The products were manufactured by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest. Affected butter products include:

  • Lot 2424091 – Best before date: February 22, 2025
  • Lot 2424111 – Best before date: February 23, 2025
  • Lot 2426891 – Best before date: March 22, 2025
  • Lot 2426991 – Best before date: March 23, 2025
  • Lot 2424191 – Best before date: February 23, 2025
  • Lot 2427591 – Best before date: March 29, 2025

The FDA did not immediately respond to a request from CBS MoneyWatch for product-specific information about what people who have the recalled butter in their possession should do.

FDA general guidelines recommend that consumers who have purchased recalled foods discard the product or return it to the retailer for a full refund.
