‘Candyman’ star Tony Todd dies at 69: NPR

Actor Tony Todd has died. He was best known as the star of Candyman Horror films. Todd died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, his manager Jeffrey Goldberg confirmed. He was 69 years old. The cause of death was not revealed.

“I have had the privilege of having Tony as my friend and client for over 30 years, and I will miss this great man every day,” Goldberg said in an email to NPR.

At 6’3″, Todd was a very tall, extremely versatile actor with hundreds of film appearances including Train, The rock And Final destination.

He rose to fame in 1992 when he played the ghost of a murdered black artist in the horror film Candyman. Todd reprized the role three more times in subsequent films in the series.

“My beloved. May you rest in strength, sweet to the sweet ones in heaven,” said Virginia Madsen, Todd’s Candyman co-star in a tearful post on Instagram. “The great actor Tony Todd has left us and is now an angel. Just like he was in life.”

Tony Todd was born in Washington, DC in 1954 and grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. He studied at the Eugene O’Neill National Theater Institute in Waterford, Connecticut and at Trinity Rep Conservatory in Providence, Rhode Island

In addition to his on-screen career, Todd also appeared in shows on and off Broadway and was a prolific voice actor with appearances in films, television shows and video games.

“Those who knew him will remember his warm laugh, his generous spirit and his dedication to his craft,” Goldberg said. “Whether on stage, screen or in person, Tony brought an unyielding honesty that resonated with his friends, family and fans.”
