Cantonment boy dies after Alabama man’s suspected DUI accident

An Alabama man is behind bars after the Florida Highway Patrol says the vehicle crash he caused killed a 14-year-old boy in Escambia County on Wednesday.

FHP says it arrested 49-year-old Shawn Wilber of Daphne, Alabama after he was charged with one count of vehicular homicide and one count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 14-year-old who was involved in the crash was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The News Journal previously reported that FHP was investigating a crash that occurred Nov. 6 on Interstate 10 near mile marker 9 in Escambia County.

In the van were a 50-year-old woman, a 50-year-old man, a 25-year-old man, a 12-year-old boy, a 27-year-old man and the 14-year-old boy.

FHP originally said the 14-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries, but later said the child died at the hospital. All other people in the vehicle reportedly suffered minor injuries.

“Wilber was originally charged with DUI and arrested for causing serious bodily injury on the night of the accident,” a new FHP release said. “A minor occupant in the Toyota SUV was pronounced dead on November 9, 2024.”

Wilber is currently being held without bail in the Escambia County Jail.
