CCSO investigates suspicious incident in Dunkirk, finds Halloween decorations set off alarm in community – Southern Maryland News Net

On the morning of November 8, 2024, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suspicious event in a residential neighborhood in Dunkirk, Maryland.

Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) have been assigned to the case. Upon arrival, it was reported that a human-shaped object was hanging from a tree in the front yard of a residence. Concerned citizens initially assumed that the object was a racially motivated statement, which caused concern in the community.

Investigators contacted the homeowner where the object was located. The homeowner shared that his family had been decorating for Halloween and that the item in question was part of a larger display put up in the spirit of the holiday.

Before police arrived on scene, a family member realized that the object hanging on the tree had a negative perception. He immediately removed it and placed it on the floor.

Other neighbors who were not directly involved in the incident confirmed that they had seen the object in various locations around the yard over the past two weeks.

The homeowner asked to speak to the concerned neighbors, apologized for the misunderstanding, and invited them to his home if they wanted to discuss the incident further.

Through investigation and consultation with the Calvert County Prosecutor’s Office, this case was closed and it was determined that it was an unfortunate misunderstanding resulting from a Halloween decoration.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office takes racist and hate incidents seriously and will continue to work to ensure Calvert County remains a safe community for all residents.
