Chalmette High students were injured in a five-bus crash near Lafayette, authorities said

LAFAYETTE, La. (WVUE) – Several Chalmette High School students were injured in a highway crash Tuesday (Nov. 5) involving five school buses and a truck pulling a belt trailer, according to school officials.

Lafayette police told television station KDAN that six students suffered “minor to moderate injuries.” But school officials told Fox 8 that nine students were treated at a hospital for their injuries and then released.

The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on westbound Interstate 10 near the I-10/I-49 interchange. I-10 westbound was closed in the area until just after 2:30 p.m

According to KDAN, the accident occurred when one school bus rear-ended another, causing a chain reaction, police said.

The students traveled to Lake Charles for a Louisiana high school marching band competition at McNeese Cowboy Stadium, which was expected to feature 69 bands and approximately 6,500 students.
