Cheese sold at Aldi, Market Basket and others has been recalled due to listeria concerns

Soft cheese sold by retailers including Aldi and Market Basket is being recalled because it may be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A separate but related recall was issued Friday involving turkey sandwiches containing recalled cheese and was distributed in six states.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., sickening 1,600 and killing 260 people each year. Young people, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk, and listeria infection can lead to miscarriage and stillbirth, the FDA and CDC noted.

The recall involves seven varieties of aged cheese made at a facility in Lena, Illinois, where routine testing revealed the equipment may be contaminated, New Holland, Pennsylvania-based Savencia Cheese USA said in the recall, which was expanded earlier this week became. According to health authorities, listeria is a hardy germ that can spread in food processing plants and is difficult to completely eliminate.

The recalled cheese was sold in Aldi stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri, Aldi said in its own statement.

The recalled cheeses were manufactured in late September and mid-October and have the best purchase dates: December 24, 2024 and January 13, 2025.

A subsequent recall affects sandwiches sold under the CIBUS Fresh, Jack & Olive and Sprig and Sprout brands in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Tennessee. The 9.65-ounce Fall Turkey Sandwiches with the recalled spreadable brie cheese have an expiration date of November 2, 2024 through November 9, 2024.
