CNN anchor Fareed Zakaria gives three reasons why Harris lost in the Democrats’ crushing defeat to Trump

CNN host Fareed Zakaria listed three main reasons why Vice President Kamala Harris was so badly defeated in the election against Donald Trump last week – and even defeated Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in his Democratic defeat on Sunday.

Zakaria claimed that the Biden administration’s poor handling of the southern border, an “overzealous abuse of the law to punish Trump” and the left’s enthusiasm for “identity politics” fueled Trump’s victory last Tuesday, in which he received 312 electoral votes.

The Democratic Party’s first mistake is its “blindness to the collapse of the immigration system and the chaos at the border,” Zakaria said on his cable television show.

“An asylum system designed for a small number of persecuted people was used by millions to gain legal entry,” he said. “Instead of shutting it down, the Liberals branded anyone who protested as heartless and racist. They missed a massive shift in American public opinion in just a few years.”

When Harris, 60, appeared on “The View” and infamously said she wouldn’t do anything other than Biden’s White House, she should have said she “should have closed the border sooner,” Zakaria argued.

Zakaria also insisted that the “overzealous abuse of law to punish Trump” had strengthened his standing in the eyes of voters after public opinion turned against him following the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021.

The CNN anchor said the “most egregious” example was the case prosecuted by Bragg, the left-wing district attorney in Manhattan. He noted that Bragg was once skeptical about prosecuting the case for falsifying business records, but he faced pressure from the left to file charges.

“Some cases, like the one in Georgia, were legitimate, but the large number of cases piling up in rapid succession created the impression that the legal system was being used as a weapon to trap Trump,” he said.

“It confirmed to his base what they had always believed — that overeducated urban liberals were hypocrites who were happy to flout rules and norms when it served their purposes.”

Trump, 78, was convicted of 34 felonies in the Manhattan case last June and still faces two federal trials and a state case in Georgia accusing him of improperly influencing the 2020 election results in the Peach State. It is no longer expected that the remaining proceedings will be continued.

Zakaria ultimately criticized Democrats for the “dominance of identity politics on the left,” which he said has alienated many Americans outside the urban academic bubble.

He said Latinos found it strange when liberals started using the gender-neutral word Latinx.

“This kind of obsession led Democrats to view people too much in terms of their ethnic, racial or gender identities and to overlook, for example, working-class Latinos turning to Trump, perhaps because they were socially conservative or liked his macho rhetoric or even agreed with his tough stance on immigration,” he said.

The CNN host added that the left’s focus on identity politics and its supposed fight for free speech via “cancel culture” has become “illiberal.”

“Liberals cannot achieve liberal goals – no matter how virtuous – through illiberal means,” Zakaria said.
