Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood did the Impossible Recording duet

Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood took a different approach when recording their new duet “I’m Gonna Love You.”

They recorded it together in the studio… live.

It may not sound like much, but these days, with a very busy schedule, it’s almost impossible to get together in a studio. And thanks to the power of technology, the burden of having to do it this way is non-existent – artists can record on different sides of the planet and still combine their voices on one track.

However, Johnson is very hands-on with his work and made a point of being in the studio when Underwood recorded her vocals.

“I never miss a beat in the studio,” he continues to tell Kelleigh Bannen Today’s Country Radio. “I am very, very, very Hands in the mud on this stuff. I have my fingers in all that stuff.”

Johnson had already recorded his vocals and after Underwood conducted their recording session, the two thought about the song for a while.

“I don’t know what it was… there wasn’t a look of disappointment on her face, it just was,” he says, putting his hand to his mouth and looking down thoughtfully.

“I ask myself, ‘What don’t you like? What’s up?’ Because it didn’t have the boom,” he explains. “We’re both professionals, and that didn’t exist for me either.”

Underwood suggested singing it together live as a real duet. Johnson agreed.

“So we went to opposite sides of the glass – just like you and me – and we sang it live and that’s what’s on the record,” he reveals.

“What you hear is a recording, live,” he adds. “I swear to God.”

In the end, the decision was the right one and opened the door for some organic, natural moments. The humming in the bridge, for example, is completely improvised.

“It was so organic. It was like singing in church,” admits Johnson.
