College Football Playoff Rankings: Georgia exits preliminary field after loss to Ole Miss

Georgia fell out of the preliminary playoff field in the second edition of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs fell to 12th and are the first team out of the 12-team group. Georgia is currently on the outside looking in as No. 13 Boise State would be in the playoffs as the fifth seed conference champion.

Georgia may not stay on the outside of the playoffs for long. The Bulldogs host No. 7 Tennessee on Saturday night. A win would put the Bulldogs back in the 12-team bracket two weeks before the start of the regular season.

Oregon retained the top spot in the rankings and projected group. Georgia’s loss landed Texas at No. 2 in the standings and No. 3 overall behind Ohio State. The Big Ten has four teams in the top five, while Indiana moved up to No. 5 behind Penn State. The conference is a great place to have all four teams in the playoffs at the end of the season, as both Indiana and Penn State finish the season 11-1 and could miss the Big Ten title game.

Ole Miss moved ahead of Georgia at No. 11 after its 28-10 win over the Bulldogs. The Rebels moved up five places with the win.

Miami fell as low as No. 9 in the rankings and No. 4 in the rankings after Saturday’s loss to Georgia Tech.

1.Oregon

2.Texas

3.BYU

4.Miami

BYU moved up three spots after its 22-21 win at Utah. The Cougars host Kansas in Week 12.

No. 12 Boise State and No. 5 Ohio State

No. 11 Ole Miss at No. 6 Penn State

No. 10 Alabama and No. 7 Indiana

No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 8 Tennessee

In this scenario, three of the four first-round games would take place in Big Ten stadiums. It is very plausible that this could also become a reality. We don’t think Tennessee won’t be ranked No. 8 next week. Either the Vols will advance with a big road win at Georgia, or they will fall a few spots with a loss.
