College Football Playoff Top 25: Second 2024 CFP Rankings Revealed

The first reveal of the College Football Playoff Top 25 last week set the tone for the postseason race, which quickly took a turn after several upsets. Now the latest snapshot of what the selection committee thinks about the contending teams becomes clear as the rankings shift and paths change.

In the first year of the new format, the top four seeded conference champions will receive the top four seeds, earning a bye to the quarterfinals to be played at one of the New Years Six bowl sites. The remaining eight bids are filled by seven overall qualifiers and the fifth-highest ranked conference champion. The higher seeded teams host the lower seeded teams in the first round.

For these reasons, the College Football Playoff top 25 does not necessarily reflect the final round.

Now, 11 weeks into the season, the selection committee has ranked the top 25 teams with a chance at a spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.

1. Oregon (Big Ten)

The Ducks lead the undefeated teams with just four teams remaining and have completed the group’s toughest schedule to date with wins over Ohio State and Boise State. Dan Lanning’s group has a clear path to the Big Ten title game and a potential No. 1 overall seed that hasn’t changed.

Next schedule: at Wisconsin vs. Washington

After entering the season among the top Big Ten contenders, Ohio State suffered a road loss to Oregon but rebounded with a road win over Penn State. They remain in the hunt for the Big Ten Championship and a first-round bye with two big games remaining on the schedule.

Next schedule: Northwestern vs. Indiana vs. Michigan

3. Texas (SEC)

After a loss to Georgia, Texas bounced back with wins. After watching the Bulldogs suffer a second loss, the Longhorns return to the top of the SEC with a shot at securing a first-round bye.

Next schedule: at Arkansas, vs. Kentucky, at Texas A&M

4. Penn State

After starting the season 7-0, Penn State lost a home game to Ohio State that could have paved the way for an appearance in the Big Ten title game. With a rebound win under their belt, the rest of James Franklin’s team’s schedule still offers a path to its first CFP appearance.

Next schedule: at Purdue, at Minnesota, against Maryland

5.Indiana

College football’s surprising story: First-year coach Curt Cignetti made good on his promise to win at Indiana by entering the final month undefeated. The Hoosiers sit atop the Big Ten standings alongside Oregon as they control their own destiny in a game at Ohio State. Another test was passed with ease on Saturday against Michigan.

Upcoming schedule: Ohio State vs. Purdue

6. BYU (Big 12)

The Big 12’s top team, BYU, stayed undefeated with a thrilling win over Utah. The Cougars already have a win over Kansas State and have a clear path to the conference title game.

Next schedule: vs. Kansas, at Arizona State, vs. Houston

7. Tennessee

After coming through several SEC games with victories, including a rivalry win over Alabama, the Volunteers overcame the road loss to Arkansas and re-entered the SEC conversation. A win-or-win game against Georgia is now at the top of college football’s bucket list as all eyes turn to the loser’s record.

Next schedule: at Georgia vs. UTEP at Vanderbilt

8. Notre Dame

Despite suffering an early loss to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame capitalized on its chances to remain a CFP contender by defeating Texas A&M, Louisville and Navy. Marcus Freeman’s side will have a chance to top the list and secure one of the overall spots.

Upcoming schedule: vs. Virginia, vs. Army, at USC

9. Miami (ACC)

Miami fell victim to an upset against Georgia Tech that knocked them out of the undefeated ranks and cast serious doubt on the strength of the schedule. The Hurricanes, like the rest of the ACC, now appear to be on thin ice in the playoff race.

Upcoming schedule: vs. Wake Forest at Syracuse

10. Alabama

In its first year under Kalen DeBoer, Alabama experienced ups and downs but remained in the mix. The Crimson Tide overcame their biggest final challenge with a blowout win over LSU, giving themselves a platform to stay in the home stretch on the right side of the CFP bubble.

Next schedule: vs. Mercer, at Oklahoma, vs. Auburn

11. Ole Miss

After sitting on the wrong side of the bubble in the first College Football Playoff rankings, Ole Miss forced itself into the conversation by beating Georgia. Lane Kiffin’s team now appears firmly in the running for a postseason spot in the crowded bubble.

Upcoming schedule: vs. Florida, vs. Mississippi State

The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Ole Miss and are now entering the discussion with the rest of the SEC’s two-loss teams in hopes of positioning themselves in the top 12. A win-or-win home game against Tennessee awaits Georgia Now on the wrong side of things.
