Collin Gillespie of the Suns breaks his right ankle

Suns guard Collin Gillespie He was diagnosed with a fractured right ankle, the team announced today in a press release (Twitter link via Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic).

According to the Suns, Gillespie will be re-evaluated in four weeks. That doesn’t necessarily mean he will be ready to return at that time – just that he will be evaluated at that time.

Gillespie, who has a two-way contract with Phoenix, has appeared in just one NBA game so far this season, logging 3:26 minutes in a win over Dallas on Oct. 26. He suffered the injury in Friday’s G League season opener, just two minutes into his debut for the Valley Suns.

The Suns initially listed Gillespie’s injury as a sprain, but the Valley Suns head coach John Little said on Monday that the 25-year-old was still undergoing tests to determine the severity of the injury (Twitter video link via Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports).

Gillespie’s absence won’t have any real impact on the Suns’ NBA rotation, as he had several players ahead of him on the depth chart, but it’s an unfortunate turn of events for a young player who has already lost an entire season due to injury. The former Villanova star missed his entire 2022-23 rookie season as the Nuggets’ two-way player after suffering a broken lower leg while helping out at practice at his alma mater.
