Costco butter recall due to lack of “contains milk” statement: FDA

FoodSafety.gov recommends either returning recalled foods for a refund or throwing them away so other people or animals don’t eat them.

Costco customers with milk allergies may need to check their refrigerators as 80,000 pounds of the retailer’s butter is being recalled because the packaging is missing the statement “contains milk,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall of 1,300 cases of 79,200 pounds of butter was initiated on Oct. 11 by a wholesaler in Littlefield, Texas, due to an undeclared allergen, FDA records show. The allergen in Kirkland Signature unsalted sweet cream butter (46,800 pounds) and Kirkland Signature salted sweet cream butter (32,400 pounds) is milk, the federal agency said.

As of Nov. 7, the recall was classified as Class II, meaning use or contact with the butter “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects,” according to the FDA. Federal records show the butter was distributed throughout Texas, but which portions were not disclosed.

It’s also unclear whether customers have experienced allergic reactions to the butter.

USA TODAY contacted Costco on Monday but did not receive a response.

What to do with the recalled butter?

The FDA has not provided instructions for customers who have already purchased the butter. FoodSafety.gov recommends people either return recalled products to the store where they purchased them for a refund or dispose of the product properly so that other people or animals cannot eat it.
