Costco has recalled 80,000 pounds of butter due to a warning about missing milk

  • Costco has recalled 79,200 pounds of butter because it did not state it contained milk.
  • The FDA classified the recall as Class II, indicating potential temporary health risks.
  • The butter was manufactured by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest and distributed in Texas.

Costco recalled 79,200 pounds of butter last month because it did not include a disclaimer that the product contained milk.

1,300 cases of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 900 cases of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter were recalled for omitting allergen warnings.

The Food and Drug Administration said both types of butter list cream as an ingredient, “but the ‘Contains milk’ statement may be missing.”

On November 7, the FDA classified the recall as “Class II,” meaning a person with allergies exposed to the product could experience “temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

In such cases, according to the FDA, “the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is low.”

Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest in North Texas produced all of the affected butter. The best before date was between February 22, 2025 and March 29, 2025.

The 46,800 pounds of unsalted butter and 32,400 pounds of salted butter were distributed throughout Texas.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 identifies eight major food groups as allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.

By law, these foods account for approximately 90% of food allergies in the United States.

Any product that contains one or more of the main foods that can cause allergic reactions must list them in the ingredients or after the word “contains”.

Kirkland Signature is Costco’s own private label brand that is popular with warehouse club members.

Costco and Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment outside of regular U.S. business hours.
