“Cowboys place Dak Prescott on IR with hamstring injury,” Stephen Jones says

Dak Prescott is moving to injured reserve, with his timetable for return from Sunday’s hamstring injury still unclear.

Although the move hasn’t been made official yet, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said during an interview with team affiliate 105.3 The Fan that the team needs to do it. He also said the team doesn’t know whether Prescott will be able to play again this season.

“I think it’s probably impossible for him to come back within the four-week period. We’ll put him over there and we’ll be able to use that roster spot for the next four weeks and go from there.”

“Obviously it’s a difficult situation to lose him for that period of time but we’ll do what’s in the best interests of Dak and at the moment no one knows if it’s going to be four or six weeks. “We just have to keep doing it watch and see where it takes us.”

Prescott suffered the injury last week against the Atlanta Falcons and his status has been up in the air ever since. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged Wednesday that a stint on IR was likely, but the more concerning news came Thursday when it was announced that Prescott’s injury might require season-ending surgery.

ESPN’s Todd Archer reports that Prescott faces a partial tear of his right hamstring in six to eight weeks, although no decision on surgery has been made yet.

With Prescott out for the foreseeable future, all eyes will be on Cooper Rush as the career backup once again takes over at center for Dallas. After taking over from Prescott in the fourth quarter on Sunday, Rush passed for 115 yards on 13 of 25 yards and a touchdown. As a starter, he has a career record of 5-1.

Jones expressed confidence that Rush could help the team without Prescott:

“I thought Cooper did a great job against Atlanta the other day. He’s obviously improved in the past and won a lot of games for us, so we’re really happy with what Cooper can do.”

Prescott’s absence comes at a particularly bad time for the 3-5 Cowboys, who have had no shortage of injuries this season. The team has divisional play in three of its next four games, and if things go poorly they could be all but eliminated from the playoffs by the end of that stretch.
