Cowboys place QB Dak Prescott on IR with hamstring injury

FRISCO, Texas – Although the move has not been officially announced, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will be placed on injured reserve, according to Executive Vice President Stephen Jones.

Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Friday: “I think it’s probably impossible for him to come back within the four-week period, so we’ll put him over there and have that roster spot that we can use over the next four weeks and from there, of course, losing him for that period of time is a difficult situation, but we will do what is in the best interest of Dak and I don’t think anyone knows if that is the case. I’ll be four. We’ll just have to keep watching this and see where it takes us.”

Multiple sources said Prescott expects a recovery of six to eight weeks due to the partial avulsion of his Achilles tendon he suffered in last week’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

He has sought numerous opinions on the injury and earlier Friday, owner and general manager Jerry Jones told The Fan that there is no answer yet as to whether Prescott will need surgery.

If he undergoes surgery, he would miss the remainder of the regular season. In 2022, left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a complete avulsion of his hamstring shortly before the start of the season and missed the first 13 games.

“He needs to have a few weeks off before he can see if surgery is really needed and that’s why he doesn’t want surgery. He wants to be on the field and try,” Jerry Jones said. “And he’s weighing it up, we’re weighing it up and we’ll just see how it goes here.”

It’s likely Prescott will be placed on injured reserve Saturday as the Cowboys look to promote a player from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. That would keep him out for at least the next four games through Dec. 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but would likely require more time to return.

By then, the 3-5 Cowboys could be well out of the playoff hunt with four games remaining in the regular season.

“I’m aware it’s there, I’m aware it could happen,” Jerry Jones said, “but that kind of thinking didn’t factor into it.”
