Daniel Jones of the Giants and Bryce Young of the Panthers could be their last chances

MUNICH – So many of them fail.

So many high-profile quarterbacks fail to develop into the franchise-changing saviors they are billed as.

The ceilings and projections that analysts, draft experts and fans place on them are not being met.

The trust of their coaches and managers is not rewarded.

German football fans will now experience this reality up close.

Sunday’s Giants clash against the Panthers – two teams with 2-7 records – at Allianz Arena will feature two quarterbacks, Daniel Jones and Bryce Young, who were drafted in the top 10 and are currently at the top of the uncertainty there stand position.

Although Giants head coach Brian Daboll hasn’t said so yet, Jones could be playing for his starting spot on Sunday.

A loss to the weak Panthers would put an end to any delusions of miraculously turning the season around, and with a release week following Sunday’s game, it would be a logical time to make a change.

“I’m just focused on the next opportunity,” Jones said Friday. “You cannot afford to be distracted or allow this to affect your preparation for next week. We understand that we have a job to do. There are things we need to correct and improve and that is where our focus needs to be. I think we have a mature group of guys who understand how to do it and we had a good week of training.”

Jones has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 1,880 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions and has a passer rating of 82.9.

He added 239 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

There are brief periods of competence, like in the second half of last week’s loss to the Commanders, but far too many periods of ineptitude – especially in his sixth year.

Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen notably did not draft Jones, who was the No. 6 overall pick in 2019.

But they showed great faith and invested in him, handing him a four-year, $160 million contract in 2023 rather than use the franchise tag and force Jones to prove himself again.

Then there’s Young, who the Panthers drafted No. 1 overall last year.

Head coach Dave Canales and GM Dan Morgan are both in their first seasons at those positions and also did not draft Young.

The lesson? Bad quarterbacks get their coaches and executives fired.

And the new regimes are likely to move on soon.

Young was disastrous.

He led the Panthers to a dismal 2-14 record last year, completing just 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a passer rating of 73.7.

This year, he has slipped even further, completing 60.2 percent of his passes for 694 yards, three touchdowns, six interceptions and a paltry 63.1 passer rating in four games.

He was benched after Week 2, but Andy Dalton’s thumb injury prompted him to return.

Morgan hasn’t publicly given Young any commitment or vote of confidence and declined to reveal this week whether he will remain the starter when Dalton is healthy, saying he’s “open-minded” about signing another quarterback is their top pick in the 2025 draft.

Sunday’s result could play a role in any team’s ability to recruit a new quarterback if they go that route.

Currently, according to Tankathon, the Panthers would be the No. 4 overall pick, while the Giants would be the No. 7 pick.

They’ve already started the process, but a loss for either team on Sunday would increase fans’ inclination to get excited about the 2025 quarterback class.

Maybe foreign soil could spark Jones or Young.

This could be their last chance.
