Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joey on Full House, reveals he has cancer

Actor Dave Coulier, who played Uncle Joey on the popular sitcom “Full House,” has been diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, he said Wednesday.

“Five weeks ago I was diagnosed with stage three non-Hodgkin lymphoma. And in that time, I had three surgeries, I had chemotherapy and I lost a little bit of hair,” the 65-year-old told NBC’s “TODAY” show.

“I kind of look like a little baby bird now, but it’s definitely been a roller coaster ride,” he added.

He said he initially had a cold and noticed a slight swelling in his groin, which quickly grew to the size of a golf ball within five days. His doctors decided to do some scans and a biopsy and he was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, which he described as “a very aggressive form.”

Coulier said news of the diagnosis was a “punch in the gut.”

Doctors then examined his bone marrow to determine the stage and found that it had not spread.

“We got the good news that day when we got the results that, as you know, it had not spread. And so the cure rate rose to over 90 percent at that point. So it’s very treatable,” he said.

He has since undergone chemotherapy, with another scheduled for Friday. His chemotherapy was scheduled to be completed in February.

“Complete remission should be achieved by then. Fingers crossed. I look at it as a journey,” Coulier said. “If I can help someone watching today get a screening test — a breast exam, a colonoscopy, a prostate exam — then do it, because to me, early detection meant everything.”

Coulier played Joey Gladstone on the ABC sitcom “Full House” from 1987 to 1995 and in the remake “Fuller House” from 2016 to 2020.

He has been open about his health journey in the past. In 2022, he shared an Instagram post in which he said that he had been sober since January 1, 2020.

In that post he said: “I loved alcohol but it didn’t love me back. I have decided to make a decision for my own well-being, the well-being of my family and the people around me who I love so much.”

He said sobriety helped him deal with the loss of his father, brother and “Full House” co-star Bob Saget, who died of head trauma in January 2022.

“Thank God I was sober during this [the deaths of] “My brother, my dad and Bob, because it really helped me get through a really hard time where I had to get back in touch with the rawness of those feelings,” he previously said on “TODAY With Hoda & Jenna.”
