Deebo Samuel struggles, explained: 49ers WR lashes out at teammates Taybor Pepper and Jake Moody after missing field goals

The 49ers have had a frustrating 2024 season so far by their standards.

As the reigning NFC champions entered Week 10 with a 4-4 record, San Francisco hoped to gain momentum in the second half against Tampa Bay. Kicker Jake Moody ultimately gave the 49ers a 23-20 victory with a game-winning field goal, but his performance wasn’t exactly pretty.

Moody missed three field goals in Sunday’s game, and after the third miss, star wide receiver Deebo Samuel expressed his anger and frustration by laying hands on Moody and the team’s long snapper, Taybor Pepper.

Here’s what you need to know about the courtside interaction between Samuel, Pepper and Moody during San Francisco’s win over the Buccaneers in Week 10.

As time expired in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, the 49ers had an opportunity to extend their three-point lead with a field goal, which would have made it more difficult for Tampa Bay to mount a comeback.

However, Moody missed the 44-yard field goal attempt, giving the Buccaneers a chance to tie the game with a field goal of their own. It was Moody’s third missed field goal of the game.

Shortly afterwards, Samuel was seen in a heated argument with Pepper and Moody. He appears to grab Peppers by the neck and pushes him away, but also hits Moody in the helmet.

San Francisco won the game as time expired on a 44-yard field goal by Moody.

Samuel said after the game that he was “a little out of character” but talked it out with Moody. “We will get over this,” he told reporters.

While things ended up going well for the 49ers and they improved to 5-4 on the season, Samuel’s actions on the sideline will certainly be a topic of conversation after the game and moving forward.
