Disruptions to Amtrak service continue after a fire near tracks in New York City

NEW YORK – Disruptions to Amtrak service on the Northeast Corridor continued Wednesday due to a fire near a train track in New York City.

Service between New York and New Haven, Connecticut was suspended and passengers were advised to take Metro-North. Railway officials said Tuesday evening that they expected normal operations to resume at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Amtrak service between New York and New Haven was suspended Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out along the tracks in the Bronx. There were also delays between New York and Washington and between Boston and New Haven.

A spokesman for Con Edison said the fire started while Amtrak employees were working on a high-voltage transmission cable and a transformer. The fire spread to a nearby warehouse and the parking lot of a Con Edison substation, damaging three cars, spokesman Philip O’Brien said.
