Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition may have been leaked

After the record-breaking success of Baldur’s Gate 3Larian Studios seems ready to bring fans back to Rivellon for an enhanced journey. Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition was first released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Now, seven years later, fans could finally be getting a native next-gen edition, if a new pan-European Gaming Information review is to be believed.

While it’s standard practice to get ratings before release, Larian hasn’t announced any Divinity-related projects yet, so it looks like the cat has gotten out of the bag this time around. PEGI is the European equivalent of the American ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) and is responsible for rating upcoming games. This supposedly improved version of the game was given an 18+ tag, with one scene in particular flagged for the crucifixion. Anyone who has played it knows that this is just a drop in the ocean for a game full of dark content.

Divinity Original Sin 2 – Enhanced Edition is the best way to experience the genre-defining role-playing game.

This is all quite a surprise considering Larian’s insistence on moving forward and building something new as a result Baldur’s Gate 3. However, it makes perfect sense to recreate an already popular game using the improved tools of its successor.

If you’re not familiar, Divinity: Original Sin 2 was the studio’s last title before development began BG3and its success is largely why Hasbro is working with the highly acclaimed RPG developer. Baldur’s Gate Fans will feel right at home when they jump into the game for the first time. The two titles share largely the same framework, plunging players into a sprawling, isometric adventure where they can either create their own unique character or choose from a handful of “origin” options, with both paths featuring unique interactions and dialogue. All of Baldur’s Gate’s twisting narrative paths, heartfelt NPC interactions, and destructible environments (and status effects) have also been mastered for the first time DOS2.

As exciting as this is for longtime fans, it gets even better. This is probably just a taste of Larian’s future. We still don’t know anything definite about their next game, but founder Swen Vincke’s comments suggest it’ll be worth staying excited for what comes next. That’s a tall order, but considering the studio has delivered three critical darlings in a row, it’s certainly not out of the question.

Unfortunately, the next game is probably still years away and players will have to bide their time for now – which is the case given that it’s pretty simple BG3 will continue to receive support post-launch (including regular Mod Manager updates for console players).

We currently have no knowledge of a release date for this Definitive edition (or whether players who own the last-gen edition will receive a free/discounted upgrade), but it certainly won’t be long before official confirmation is released. All in all, this unexpected drop is an excellent consolation prize for anyone craving more Larian magic.
