Berkeley police arrested a driver Sunday evening after he hit a fire hydrant and struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk, authorities report.

The accident happened at San Pablo Avenue and Gilman Street around 9:30 p.m., Berkeley police said.

Limited information was available due to the ongoing investigation, but the pedestrian was taken to Code 3 Highland Hospital following the accident with lights and sirens blaring.

According to police, the pedestrian was conscious, speaking and appeared to be in stable condition.

After the driver hit him, he was initially described as bleeding from the head and unconscious, but he woke up at the scene.

The driver’s name was not immediately available until booking.

The crash created a geyser from a sheared fire hydrant on the west side of San Pablo near the Chevron gas station.
