Dwayne Johnson Talks Chemistry for ‘Red One’ with Chris Evans (Exclusive)

Chris Evans’ comedic skills sent Dwayne Johnson into a frenzy on set Red.

Johnson, 52, chatted with PEOPLE during the world premiere of the duo’s Christmas action comedy in Berlin on Sunday, November 3, and revealed how he and Evans, 43, competed on set.

When asked how he kept a straight face in some of the funnier scenes, considering his character is more serious, Johnson laughed and joked, “Because I’m a professional,” before admitting, “No, I laughed so many times .” I’m notorious for ruining takes. That’s just what happens.

But to Evans’ credit, “Chris is a very funny guy. He’s also very talented,” Johnson continued.

“And I thought earlier that maybe me and Chris had good chemistry. He had that too.” [And] That’s what we did,” he added.

Red is based on an original story by Hiram Garcia, production president of Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, and Jake Kasdan, who previously directed Johnson’s films Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, than that Director and co-producer.

The film is about an ELF task force commander who teams up with a bounty hunter to save Christmas. Johnson plays Callum Drift, Evans plays Jack O’Malley.

“After Santa Claus (JK Simmons) – codename: RED ONE – is kidnapped, the North Pole’s head of security (Johnson) must team up with the world’s most notorious bounty hunter (Evans) in a globe-spanning, action-packed mission to save Christmas,” it says in an official summary.

In addition to Johnson, Evans and Simmons, 69, Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Nick Kroll and Kiernan Shipka round out the cast of the upcoming film.

When he spoke to PEOPLE in Berlin on Sunday, Johnson said he was attracted to him Red because he felt “the material was good” and “loved” the script, which was written by Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Shazam! Rage of the gods).

And admittedly, the wrestler-turned-actor also wanted to “make a Christmas movie” — but not just any Christmas movie.

“I think when you start acting… the idea of ​​making a Christmas movie… you want to make sure you make a good movie,” he said. “You don’t want to be part of a crew making a crappy Christmas movie. So I think we made a good one.”

Red hits theaters November 15th.
