Earthquake of magnitude 5.96 shakes the Cuba region – GFZ

(Volcano Discovery.com) Cuba was struck by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake this morning near Bartolomé Maso, Granma, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported.
The quake occurred on Sunday morning, November 10, 2024, at 10:50 a.m. local time at a shallow depth of 17 km below the epicenter, near Bartolomé Maso, Granma, Cuba. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The quake’s precise magnitude, epicenter and depth could be revised in the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other authorities release their report.
Our monitoring service has identified a second report from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), which also lists the quake as having a magnitude of 6.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) with a magnitude of 5.4 and the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) with a magnitude of 5.6.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been clearly felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It could have caused mild to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking was likely in Bartolomé Maso (pop. 53,000), 30 km from the epicenter, and Yara (pop. 28,900), 42 km away.
In Campechuela (pop. 25,100), which is 54 km from the epicenter, Manzanillo (pop. 128,200) 54 km away, Contramaestre (pop. 70,400) 82 km away and Santiago de Cuba (pop. 555,900) 113 km away, the quake was supposed to have occurred as felt slight tremors.
