At 28 years old, Mk.gee is making waves in the indie music scene with his bold, experimental style. The musician, whose full name is Mike Gordon, is fully booked and busy. He worked on it New music with Justin Bieber and made his debut on Saturday Night Live on November 9th. And he has no plans to slow down or change his approach to creating new music.

“I think people are afraid of making mistakes and releasing projects where they’re just trying things out because it’s forever – because it exists online and can be seen and interacted with long after it’s finished,” said Mk. Man, told me Dazed in September 2024. “So there is a fear of trying things. I’m not really afraid to try things. Everything I’ve ever done is already out there, and when I started I didn’t know how to do anything. For this reason, I am not afraid of the future. All my cards are on the table.”

Mk.gee’s song “ROCKMAN” takes you to an 80s rock concert

Mk.gee’s October 2024 hit single “ROCKMAN” sounds like a modern ode to music legends of another generation, from the playful and eclectic instrumentals to the resonant vocals. Towards the end there is even an eagle hooting. As of November 2024, “ROCKMAN” has almost 3 million streams on Spotify.

Fans say they hear a mix of The Police, Sting and Phil Collins in “ROCKMAN,” and they’re here for it. “Someone call the POLICE. Mk.gee doesn’t miss. “This track is so good, it burns,” one quipped YouTubewhile another said the musician was in “his police era”. Another comment: “Mk.gee has found the ultimate way to make 80s music non-cheesy.”

Although Mk.gee hasn’t shared his specific inspiration behind “ROCKMAN,” he said BBC Radio 1 that he grew up with jazz music and New Jersey rock. “I grew up a jazz kid, so I was just obsessed,” he saidand added that he played rock concerts and performed in jazz trios when he was younger. He also nunder Bruce SpringsteenPat Metheny and Lyle Mays are among his earliest musical influences.

Mk.gee’s album Two Star and the Dream Police should “feel like a picture book”

Released in February 2024 and contains hits such as “Alesis” and “Are You Looking Up”, Mk.gee’s debut album Two Star and the Dream Police was met with rave reviews. pitchfork described the album as ““Original and extensive album that seems timeless and incredibly contemporary at the same time.” Rolling Stone wrote that it’s “an album about sadness, frustration and loss, but it’s equally about knowing what you want: love, joy, contentment.”

As for Mk.gee’s opinion on this, he said BBC Radio 1 that the album tells a story. “There’s a little story that runs through the record sonically and lyrically, but I think the whole concept Two Star and the Dream Police “It’s supposed to feel like a storybook…A little bit like that frontier story book that you’re flipping through,” he said. “The whole record is really about a second coming of this hero…It’s meant to honor some sort of hero archetype of this character [Two Star] Is.”

“The whole record was kind of a challenge for me,” he added. “I wanted it to feel like something so recognizable, but at the same time it’s impossible for something like that to exist today.”

Mk.gee told BBC Radio 1 He was “obsessed” with making music that plays with the mind and takes listeners to a “wild place.”

“I think the purpose of this record was to make something as alien as possible, but something that’s like, ‘I shouldn’t understand it, but I do,'” he explained.

On November 9th, Mk.gee performed his hit song “ROCKMAN”. Saturday Night Live Season 50 with Bill Burr hosting the episode. Before his debut, he appeared in a promotional sketch with Burr and actress Sarah Sherman in which they tried to figure out how to spell Mk.gee’s name.

“Mk.gee, how do you spell your name?” Sherman asked.

“M as in Mk.gee,” the musician replied expressionlessly.

“Yeah, ‘K’ as in ‘Kiss From a Rose’ by Seal,” Burr chimed in excitedly. “‘Dot’ as in ‘Dot Com’.”
