Final settlement? Mission: Impossible 8 trailer hints at end of franchise | Mission: Impossible

The trailer for the eighth Mission: Impossible film has been released with a new title that suggests it may be Tom Cruise’s final mission.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, due out next summer, was originally intended to be the second chapter of 2023’s Dead Reckoning, titled Dead Reckoning Part Two.

But after the seventh film achieved disappointing box office results with $570 million worldwide against a budget of $291 million, the strategy for the sequel was redefined. A release in summer 2024 has been pushed and now a new title has been announced.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the budget has risen to $400 million, which would make the film the fourth most expensive film of all time. The trade also claimed that the decision to call it the final episode in hopes of boosting box office revenue was at odds with Cruise’s hopes for the series.

“Harrison Ford is a legend,” he said in a 2023 interview. “I hope I can move forward. I have 20 years to catch up with him. I hope I can continue making Mission: Impossible movies until I’m his age.”

There are also rumors that Paramount is hoping to screen the film at the Cannes Film Festival next year.

The new film follows on from the events of Dead Reckoning and brings back long-time cast members Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, as well as new recruits Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff. Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby will also return, while Hannah Waddingham joins.

Cruise is currently filming The Revenant and Birdman director Alejandro G Iñárritu’s new film in the UK. Sandra Hülser and John Goodman also star. He was also recently linked to a possible sequel to Days of Thunder.

Next summer will also see the release of Jurassic World Rebirth starring Scarlett Johansson, James Gunn’s new take on Superman, and live-action remakes of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon.
