Five school buses involved in a serious accident on the way to the band competition in Lake Charles

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPLC) – Six students were injured in a serious accident on the way to a marching band competition in Lake Charles, according to the Lafayette Police Department (LPD).

At approximately 12:47 p.m. today, police were dispatched to a serious vehicle accident on Interstate 10 Westbound near the Opelousas exit, LPD Sgt. Robin Green said.

Five school buses and a truck pulling a belt trailer from St. Bernard Parish were involved in the accident, Green said. The accident occurred when one of the buses collided with a bus in front, causing a chain reaction with the remaining buses.

The six students were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries, Green said.

Green said the buses were on their way to the Louisiana Music Educators Association (LMEA) state marching championship being held this week at McNeese State University.

I-10 westbound reopened shortly after 2:30 p.m., police said.
