Self-identified independents made up a larger share of voters in Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election than Democrats and tied with Republicans, exit poll data from Edison Research showed.

It was the first time since Edison began polling in 2004 that independents’ share of the vote exceeded that of either of the two major U.S. political parties.

The share of independents was 34 percent in the latest update to the Edison poll, compared to 34 percent for Republicans and 32 percent for Democrats.
