‘Full House’s’ Dave Coulier reveals cancer diagnosis and positive outlook

A Detroit metropolitan native says he is undergoing chemotherapy for stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“Full House” star and St. Clair Shores native Dave Coulier opened up to People magazine about his recent cancer diagnosis.

Coulier, 65, tells the magazine that he was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in October after noticing swelling in his lymph nodes during an upper respiratory tract infection.

“Three days later my doctors called me back and said, ‘We wish we had better news for you, but you have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and it’s called B-cell lymphoma and it’s very aggressive,'” Coulier tells the Magazine. “I got a bit of a cold and then got cancer and it was pretty overwhelming. It was a really fast rollercoaster ride.”

The actor, comedian and avid hockey fan says he worked with his doctors and family on an aggressive plan to fight the cancer and received good news when a bone marrow test came back negative. “At that point, my chances of recovery went from somewhat low to 90%. And that was a great day.”

Coulier, who appeared at the Motor City Comic Con in Novi over the weekend, said he immediately began chemotherapy and shaved his head as a “preemptive strike.”

“I have my good days. I have my bad days,” Coulier tells PEOPLE about his treatment. “Some days I feel nauseous and dizzy, and other days the steroids kick in and I feel like I have a lot of energy. I actually went ice skating with some friends here in Detroit yesterday. We were just running around shooting pucks,” and it was wonderful to just be out there doing something that I love and just try to focus on all the great things that are in my life .

Coulier also tells the magazine that he’s about to become a grandpa, as his son Luc is expecting a baby with his wife Alex in March. “I have to teach him how to play hockey,” Coulier said. “There’s a lot to look forward to.”
