Texas tries to maintain its first-half shutout and Florida faces a third-and-4. The big news on this trip? Texas standout Trey Moore, the announced transfer from UTSA, gets his first sack as a Longhorn. Moore had a monster performance in the first half with three solo tackles and two tackles for a loss.

Texas makes a big play with a small swing pass to RB Quintrevion Wisner, who runs 50 yards for the score. Great downfield blocking by tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. and guard Cole Huston, and this play looked right like it was blocked on the practice field. Excellent conception, excellent execution. 5:54 2Q: Texas 21, Florida 0

Florida takes advantage of a short field and reaches the Texas 7-yard line. Will they try it on the fourth and second try? No, and after a penalty pushes the Gators back five yards, kicker Trey Smack III misses a 30-yarder. You can’t make money because you’re afraid of money, says a newspaper journalist.

Texas dominated from the first kickoff with 150 yards of offense compared to just 43 yards for Florida. Unless the Longhorns give up the ball or give away a few points, Texas fans should feel very comfortable all day on this beautiful fall afternoon.

It didn’t take long for Texas to score. Texdas QB Quinn Ewers finds his favorite target in tight end Gunnar Helm for a 22-yard touchdown pass and the Longhorns are off to the races.

The Texas defense comes up with a big play. Anthony HIll Jr. rips the ball loose from Florida RB Ja’Kobi Jackson, and Trey Moore picks it up and rumbles inside the 10-yard line. A block in the background pushes Texas back, but the Longhorns are still lined up at the 22-yard line.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian rolls the dice early and it leads to a 29-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Ewers to Matthew Golden. Texas barely converted a fourth-and-1 inside its own 30-yard line, then quickly moved down the field with a 44-yard run by receiver Isaiah Bond. A well-thought-out move helped Golden take a big lead.

A promising first drive for Texas fell apart after a tackle for loss and a sack, two bugbears for the Longhorns’ offense in recent weeks. Bert Auburn then misses a 51-yard field goal attempt to right. The Gators take over with Aidan Warner starting behind center.

Texas football will welcome back two starters: Andrew Mukuba and receiver Isaiah Bond. Mukuba, a Clemson transfer who graduated from LBJ High School in Austin, injured his knee in Texas’ 30-15 loss to Georgia and was sidelined for the team’s win over Vanderbilt two weeks ago. Mukuba has two interceptions and three pass completions for a total of 25 tackles this season.

Bond, who was Texas’ leading receiver before missing last week’s game, has 380 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Texas football will be without defensive end Colton Vasek on Saturday against Florida. The redshirt freshman was listed as questionable earlier in the week, but was downgraded to out in the SEC’s availability report filed Friday. Texas has not publicly announced Vasek’s injury.

Vasek, a Westlake High School product, has emerged to provide some depth for the Longhorns in his second season on campus. He totaled six tackles with two sacks, coming at quarterback against UTSA and Mississippi State.

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, a 5-star rookie from the distant Houston suburb of Willis, remains a game-time decision for Saturday’s contest at No. 5 Texas, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Regardless of whether he plays, Thamel says Lagway is not expected to make a significant contribution.

Lagway was stretchered off the field in the first half of last weekend’s loss to Georgia after suffering a hamstring injury. He later returned to the sideline with his legs wrapped and on crutches.

Sources told ESPN that Lagway will warm up with the Gators. The freshman has thrown for 1,071 yards on 56 of 92 passes and six touchdowns and has another 114 yards rushing.

If Lagway is unable to play, Aidan Warner will likely start for the Gators.

Texas vs Florida Predictions

Texas 27, Florida 13

DEFENSE IS ENOUGH

The injury-plagued Gators’ offense lacks bite, but Florida has an athletic defense that’s somewhat reminiscent of Georgia. It may not always be pretty, but Texas remains on track for the SEC title game.

Texas 34, Florida 10

Battered alligators lack bite

The Gators are a whole different bunch of reptiles when QB DJ Lagway plays, but the guess is he won’t be anywhere near his optimal level if he dresses up. The Horns will play their best offensive game in quite some time and avoid the surprise fever in the final crucial three weeks.

BIG WIN, BIG IMPRESSION

The CFP rankings are out and now it’s time to impress voters. Simply beating Florida isn’t enough. Texas needs to win this game convincingly, and the Longhorns will do just that.

NO DJ, NO DANCE

If Lagway doesn’t play, the Longhorns can fly through this game on autopilot. If he does that, the Gators are just talented enough to stick with Texas for a while longer if the Longhorns come out of their bye week sluggish.
