Greenpeace USA is committed to the people’s struggle: climate, justice, democracy

Washington, D.C. (November 6, 2024) Reacting to Donald Trump’s nomination as president-elect, Sushma Raman, executive director of Greenpeace USA, said:

The uncertainty, turmoil and nastiness of the last few months pale in comparison to an election result that has devastating implications for our individual rights and freedoms, the health of our democracy and the future of our planet.

Voting is a right earned through struggle – here and around the world.

But voting is only part of what makes our democracy tick. The voices of communities and social movements – particularly those excluded from the promises of democracy – as well as strengthening public and community media are critical to building resistance to bigotry, hatred and exclusion.

As an environmental and climate justice organization, we must resist attempts to roll back existing environmental and climate protections – plans that are clearly laid out in the draft Project 2025. Given the increasing attacks on freedom of expression, assembly and association, we must address the interfaces between climate justice and the protection of democracy.

Resisting the Trump agenda and advancing a progressive vision for the United States and the world is key to our organization’s relevance and survival in 2025 and beyond. Now is the time to move forward together with creativity, courage and boldness.
