Gregg Popovich is recovering from his Nov. 2 stroke, the Spurs say

SAN ANTONIO – Spurs coach Gregg Popovich continues to recover after suffering what the team called a “mild stroke” on Nov. 2.

Popovich has missed the last six games due to an illness the team previously disclosed was undisclosed.

The Spurs provided a diagnosis and update on Popovich’s condition on Wednesday, saying the coach suffered the stroke at the team’s arena.

“Popovich, who has already begun a rehabilitation program, is expected to make a full recovery,” the Spurs said in a statement. “At this point there is no timetable set for his return to the sidelines. During this time, the organization is grateful to the extended community for providing privacy and space for the Popovich family.”

Popovich is the NBA’s winningest head coach with 1,390 wins and another 170 postseason victories with five NBA titles. He is in his 29th season, all with San Antonio.

Popovich, 75, is the oldest coach in NBA history. In 2020, he surpassed the previous mark held by Hubie Brown (71 years old) in his final game as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Mitch Johnson, 37, served as the Spurs’ interim head coach during Popovich’s absence. Johnson will coach the Spurs for the foreseeable future, a source told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
