Gunmen open fire in a bar in central Mexico, killing ten people and injuring 13

A local official said gunmen opened fire at a bar in central Mexico, killing 10 people and wounding 13.

HUEHUETOCA, Mexico (AP) — Gunmen opened fire at a bar in central Mexico, killing 10 people and wounding 13, local authorities said Sunday.

The attack occurred Saturday in Querétaro’s historic city center, in a region long spared from violence in neighboring states such as Guerrero. However, in recent years there have been a number of violent incidents in the state of Querétaro, raising concerns among authorities.

Juan Luis Ferrusca Ortiz, the city’s public security chief, confirmed the attack and the number of victims. He said at least one person was arrested after the attack.

Ferrusca Ortiz said officers identified those responsible by tracing the license plates of the car the gunmen fled in, which was later abandoned and set on fire.

Two videos from the bar’s surveillance cameras shared on social media show a group of four entering the bar and randomly shooting at people eating at several tables. The video shows the screaming people throwing themselves on the ground and seeking refuge, stained with the blood of those who were shot.

Two of the 13 wounded were said to have been seriously injured.

Hours after the attack, Querétaro Gov. Mauricio Kuri vowed to bring the attackers to justice and said he was working to provide assistance to the families of those killed.

“Those responsible for this brutal act will be punished,” Kuri wrote on the social media platform X early Sunday.
