Harris campaign official suggests party faces ‘conscience examination’ after defeat | News

Harris-Walz campaign representative Lindy Li argued that the Democratic Party needs to properly assess why it lost the 2024 presidential election, as some voting blocs that have reliably supported Democrats have abandoned the party in favor of President-elect Donald Trump.

Li, a member of the campaign’s national finance committee, said the party hopes to retain at least one of the “blue wall” states in the Electoral College, even though Trump ended up winning Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin “to completely sweep,” she added adding that Vice President Kamala Harris’ supporters were in “a state of shock” due to the loss of voters in the election campaign.

“The gender gap that we longed for hasn’t materialized to any significant extent, and obviously a lot of them, young people, Latinos and African Americans, have defected to Trump,” Li said on Fox’s “America Reports.” News. “So there will be a lot of soul-searching in the next few days. I hope we can make an honest assessment and not criticize the people who have ideas and solutions on how to move forward, because if we don’t recognize America’s rightward turn, we will continue to lose.”

Ahead of the election, polling data suggested that Trump’s support among Latino and black supporters was much stronger than in previous election years, surpassing Harris’ support from the former voting bloc. The former president also participated in several podcast interviews to reach younger voters, particularly Gen Z male voters.

Reflecting on Harris’ defeat, Li suggested that Harris made the wrong choice when she chose Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) as her running mate and should have chosen Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) instead. Li, a Pennsylvania resident, admitted she was “biased” in her assessment but claimed Shapiro could have made “a big difference” since he is a centrist governor who is very popular in his state.

Li also argued that Harris made a mistake in her interview on The View last month, in which the vice president said she had made no changes to her and President Joe Biden’s leadership over the past four years. Li assessed that voters are “yearning to differentiate themselves from the Biden administration” and that Harris’s comments were “heard around the world” and seriously damaged her ability to portray herself as a candidate for change.

Trump’s victory in the 2024 election was cemented Wednesday morning after the former president won Wisconsin in the Electoral College, one of several swing states he lost in 2020 but regained this year. The vice president contacted the president-elect on Wednesday to concede the race.
